About Madras Medical College

Established in 1835 during British rule, Madras Medical College (MMC) is the third oldest medical college in India and the first in Tamil Nadu. It is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

MMC has been at the forefront of medical advancements in South India. The college campus is located in Park Town, Chennai, adjacent to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), one of Asia's largest government hospitals with over 3,000 beds, serving as the primary teaching hospital.

The institution offers a wide spectrum of undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD, MS, Diploma), super-specialty (DM, MCh), and fellowship programs. Our faculty includes renowned medical professionals, researchers, and public health experts.

Academic Programs

The MBBS program at MMC is a 5.5-year course (including one-year compulsory rotating internship) with an annual intake of 250 students. Admission is through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) conducted by the National Testing Agency.

Curriculum: The curriculum follows the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) pattern prescribed by the NMC, integrating basic sciences with clinical training from the first year.

Eligibility: Candidates must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English with minimum 50% marks (40% for reserved categories). Minimum age: 17 years as of December 31 of admission year.

MMC offers 56 postgraduate degree (MD/MS) and 32 diploma programs across various specialties. Admission is through NEET-PG conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

Duration: MD/MS: 3 years; Diploma: 2 years.

Seats: 320 MD/MS seats and 120 Diploma seats annually.

MMC offers Doctorate of Medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) programs in 15 super-specialties. Admission is through NEET-SS.

DM Programs: Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Clinical Hematology, Endocrinology, Medical Oncology, Pediatric Cardiology.

MCh Programs: Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Vascular Surgery.

Duration: 3 years for all super-specialty programs.

Super-Specialty Details

Short-term fellowships and certificate courses are offered in emerging areas of medicine.

Fellowships (1-2 years): Critical Care Medicine, Minimal Access Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Neonatology, Hand & Microsurgery, Vitreo-Retinal Surgery.

Certificate Courses (6 months): HIV Medicine, Palliative Care, Medical Ultrasound, Clinical Research, Hospital Administration.

These programs are designed for practicing doctors to acquire sub-specialty skills. Admissions are based on entrance tests and interviews.
